Tourist transport service providers by road are using the latest Japanese cars, passenger vans and luxury coaches with or without air-condition in Sri Lanka. Foreign tourists can use the road or railway to be transported to Colombo city from the Katunayake international airport which is located 31Km from the capital. Airports pick up and airport drop can be arranged prior to your arrival through your travel agent or hotel management.

There is a new express way was opened in Sri Lanka in November 2011 which is connecting the Colombo with the South of Sri Lanka. This new expressway reduces the travel time by 4 hours for the south bound passengers, where vehicles are allowed to speed up to 100 km /Hr.

As per the Sri Lanka Hon. President, there are plans to build a highway like this to connect Colombo with Jaffna in the near future. Colombo to Jaffna transport services are provided by the Government by road and train system. There are many private road transport service providers between Jaffna and Colombo. Many of the luxury busses are fully air-conditioned with bigger seats for a comfortable journey.

Busses leave Wellawatte, Colombo and central bus stand in Pettah in the night and it will take 10 - 12 hours of travelling through the towns, villages, farms and forests to reach Jaffna which is 396 Km from the Colombo city. Normally the bus fare ranges from US$ 5 to US$ 10 per person. The buses have the capacity to carry 41 to 56 passengers depending on the brand of the bus.

If you are Sri Lankan Expatriate and going to visit Colombo, be warned as there are many important roads are changed in to one way route to ease the heavy traffic. So if you want to drive a vehicle specially in Colombo get a clear knowledge of those streets to avoid heavy fines and accidents.
