Transport in Jaffna carried out by local people with bicycles, scooter, motorcycles, cars and buses. Public transport services are provided by red colored Government owned transport service SLTB, local trains, private buses and by tuk tuk. As a visitor or tourist to Jaffna you can select any of these available modes for your transport. In some routes you will find Japanese mini busses that are only suitable for short people. And the worst thing is that they are provided only with one entrance. Tall people will find difficult to stand inside of it, if they can't find a seat for them. Better avoid these busses if you are tall.Best option for the visiting tourist is to use Bicycles as there is a fuel shortage in this area currently in this year 2022.

Note: Due to ongoing Sri Lanka economy problems, there is a shortage for Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene and cooking Gas is going one. People are standing in queues to get some of them. So make your journey a planned one with enough fuel and food. Normally the Aato - 3 Wheel drivers charge Rs 1,200/- from Jaffna Railway Station up to Jaffna Hindu College area. Als there used to be cars too available for hire.

There are shops that used to hire bicycles to known people on hourly basis. If you can ride a bicycle then ask any of your friends living in Jaffna to provide you a bicycle under his consent from the bicycle renting shop. The SLTB red busses (locally it is called as CTB Busses) and Private busses of Indian origin busses are good option for you to travel places in Jaffna. They are with good height, so even if you don't get a seat, you can travel comfortably as standing passenger.

Best option is to hire a tuk tuk. But before you get in to it ask for the price as they don't have meters. Also make sure one way, return trip with parking duration. But if you used to hire a certain person's tuk tuk regularly and become as a friend with him, you will have discounts from him for each trips. Even if you are coming from Colombo, if you give him a call he will wait for you at the station or at the bus stand. Tuk Tuk will allow 3 persons only in to it as per the Government rule. Call taxis and hiring cars too are available in Jaffna. So contact your hotel management to get one of them for your travelling within Jaffna. It is better speak with your Hotel personal about hiring a vehicle. Some time they may too can provide a vehicle on hire.

There is a bus running between the Jaffna Railway station and the Jaffna bus stand which is available only at the Colombo bound train arrival time. Rs 10/- charged per person for one way trip.
