Nilavarai bottomless well got it name due to its deep water point inside of it. The well is located in the Jaffna District and now it became as a tourist attraction in Jaffna. In the past people were unable to go down in to the well and check its depth with skin diving. But it was not successful. So they named it as bottomless well that is located Nilavarai. This is one of the popular tourist destination in the North. Even local school children used to visit here and look around in this place. Actually this is not a tourist attraction.
Recently Sri Lanka Navy divers had went down with robotic diving unit and measured the depth of the well and they declared that the well goes down up to 52.5 meters in depth. Around 18 meters are with fresh water from the top surface and below is with salty water. People used to say this well was made by the Legendary Indian King Rama to quench the thirst of his wife Queen Sita. Some people say that the well was created by fallen asteroid stone that came down thousands of years back. The Nilavarai well was earlier used to provide water to nearby agriculture farm lands.
Actually this place os much interesting place for the expatriate Tamil people who used to visit here.
For them and to their families this place is with lot of folk stories when they were living here in their young age.
Even though once they had visited this deep well, they won't come back here in the future.
Nilavarai Well - loacally called as "Nilavarai Kinaru" in Tamil language. This well is located at the end of the Raja Veethy at the Puttur Road Junction. It is around 14 Km from the Jaffna Bus Stand. It can be reached via Point Pedro Road, Kovil Road and then take the Raja Veethy road.
You have to purchase entrance ticket at the gate.
Also you have to pay parking ticket fee for your vehicle too.
