Colombo to Jaffna by road will take around 5 -6 hours of driving in a good vehicle on a sunny day. Also there are facilities available to travel by Air or Train between Colombo and Jaffna city. Jaffna road covers small towns, villages and forests on your way to Jaffna. On the way to Jaffna you can find lot of petrol stations, fast food joints, Sri Lanka food restaurants and coffee shops. Most of these places provide WC and ample car parking space for their guests. Even at grocery stores you can buy mineral water, soft drinks, Biscuits along with packed food items at important Junctions on the Jaffna Colombo road. Check for the marked price and expiry dates on the products. If you are traveling in the night time must be careful about the parked vehicles without parking lights.

  • During the rainy season, flash floods may pass over the roads. Some time they may remove parts of the road. Be careful when you want to drive through the flooded roads.
  • Look out for wild elephants that may wander on the roads, quick crossing deer, wild boars and cattle heard sleeping on some roads that are near to forests.
  • Avoid drinking water from wells in Mankulam and Vavuniya area as some people may get Urinary problems due the high content of the black stone content.

  • Also at the bends (curves) don't cross over the single white line as there may be police officers waiting to book you for the offense.

Colombo to Jaffna Routes.

Express Way: Ride though Expressway from Peliyagoda up to Negombo town. Pay at the exist Toll post.
Route 1: Via Chilaw, Puttalam, Anuradhapura to Jaffna.
Route 2: Through Kurunegala, Dambulla, Anuradhapura to Jaffna.
Route 3: Via Chilaw, Puttlam, (Mannar Road) Silavaththurai, Poonagari to Jaffna.


Tourist Transport

In the Expressways, three wheels (Tuk Tuk) and motorcycles are not allowed to ride through it. It is against the law and the violator will be prosecuted by the police officers.
